Anyone who has ever witnessed a full cup of tea or a glass of wine fall, knows it seems to occur in slow motion in your mind. You experience that horrible feeling as you realize that the brand new rug you just spent a small fortune on is ruined. You might have a pet and be aware that all types of catastrophes can and do occur, and if not then we all have some clumsy buddies. My previous living room carpeting took a beating when my cat had gastrointestinal problems and we subsequently received a new dozen kitties. We kept the floors bare for a while after everything was removed. Up till the time I learned about the Ruggable rug.
Ruggable. What is it?
If you haven’t seen Ruggable in your Instagram feeds, well it is a unique kind of two layer, washable carpeting. When I first read about it, I was quite curious, could a rug actually fit in the laundry without getting ruined? I finally gave in and purchased one to find out for myself.
My 5′ by 7′ rug in my living room, which has the design “Kamran Cayenne Red Rug” and cost about $219CAD and has two layers: a rubberized non-skid underpad and the soft top rug layer, which is the washable portion.
Although these rugs lack a true carpet pile, they have a feel that is somewhat akin to Rags or Cloth Rugs. Although the top layer is thin, it is not cheap. It feels like a thick carpet underfoot when combined with the underlayer.
How to arrange the Ruggable
The Cling Effect technology, which allows you to separate & reconnect the rug cover to the rug pad, is something Ruggable takes great pride in. It resembles a weaker Velcro in some ways, but it holds the object firmly in place. Because of this you may change it however you want, and achieve a top layer of the rug that is lovely and smooth with no lumps or wrinkles.
Installing my rug was simple enough. First, you roll out the underlayer, which is made of the same latex-free material as most yoga mats, and then you spread the carpet on top of that. It does take some finesse to get it lined up, level, and even, but once it was down, I was quite happy with it. Much more so after spilling a drink on it. I just removed the top layer, put it in the washer and started the washer.
Cleaning Guidelines for Ruggable Rugs
Ruggable advises washing your rug cover in cool water with gentle detergent without any bleach. The Rug Cover can then be dried in a dryer set to low heat. Avert intense heat if necessary, the Rug Cover can also be put up to air dry.
You may clean the carpeting on the spot for minor spills. Your Ruggable Rug Cover has an interior waterproof barrier and is stain resistant. Depending on the type of accident, you can either spot clean it or machine wash it. I suggest washing your Rug Cover right away for significant stains or mishaps.
Testing For Stains! What transpired when I attempted to damage the Ruggable?
As I told previously that, I might have spilled a drink or two on the rug and that it was readily removed when I used soap and water to spot clean the area.
It was time to wash the carpeting after my possessed cat destroyed it as well. The 5′ x 7′ rug and 8′ x 10′ rug both fit into the washer with ease. And according to Ruggable, even the 9 by 12 rug will fit in most regular size washers.
I was astounded that the rug was clean, dry, didn’t shrink and came apart effortlessly after washing it according to Ruggable’s recommendations in cold water with a low setting.
However, I’ll risk spoiling my Ruggable for my audience by showing you how it cleans up as you probably want to see for yourself. I experimented with coffee and red wine, letting the coffee soak while spot-cleaning the wine. After all that I threw it into the washer. I was quite surprised to notice that both spots had entirely disappeared. Even the imprint from my chair briefly sitting in the coffee was gone. When I laid the rug back out, the spills appeared to have never occurred.
General Review of Ruggable Rugs
Overall, I have to admit that my Ruggable rug has impressed me. It is strong and comfortable to walk on. I love the way the pattern I picked out looks in my home and Ruggable’s really do wash well. I bought a few more rugs later on, one for the front and one for the back of the house, because I was so happy with the one I had in my living room. And I’m considering purchasing a different type of rug from Ruggable for my gaming room.

One Year Review - How did the Ruggable held up
Even though I personally was pleased with my rugs when I first got them, but I know most people will be concerned about their durability. Since I’ve had mine for over a year now, I can give you somewhat of an idea on what to expect.
In my infinite wisdom decided, that since I had already purchased three standard rugs and was really pleased with them at the time, so I should spend a little extra money on a nice Plush Rug for the only remaining room that doesn’t have one yet, my gaming room.
Ruggable’s washability gave me such peace of mind that I choose a dark black rug, which you should avoid, since accidents do happen, and are quite obvious on a pure black surface. But with Ruggable, I felt rather secure.
I was overjoyed when it arrived because it looked amazing and matched the aesthetic of the room perfectly, but more importantly it felt soo soft and fuzzy, my feet were thrilled.
Balding & Matting
The primary problem I have with the Ruggable shag is that, it is beginning to experience male pattern baldness in certain areas. Like underneath my chair where I loved to rub my feet, where there previously used to be faux fur, now only remains a hard surface. And if it’s not losing its hair then it’s starting to matte and beginning to reassemble a neglected dog’s fur, the only good thing is that at least it doesn’t smell like one, since Ruggable is easy to wash.
Shrinkage Due To Washing
The conventional two-layer carpets from the other collections have fared well in comparison. Each time they become dirty, I wash them several times, and they still come out clean. My greatest issue with them is that it almost seems like they have shrunk the tiniest bit, whilst during my initial lay-down, it looked to be a fantastic fit, it is now quite difficult to place the cover evenly over the base without it peeking out from one end or the other. Which is infinitely annoying.
